Another wave of teacher sickouts closes 67 DPS schools

Teacher absences have forced 67 Detroit schools to close today, the largest in a string of recent sickouts meant to call attention to high class sizes, dilapidated buildings and other problems in Michigan’s largest school district.

A DPS spokeswoman announced the closures in a email just before 6 a.m. The 46,000-student district has about 100 schools.

Today’s sickouts were timed to coincide with President Barack Obama’s visit to the North American International Auto Show, according to teachers who organized them. Teachers are expected to rally all day outside Cobo Hall. Read more>>
