MEA statement on Supreme Court ruling in Janus v. AFSCME – Michigan Education Association

EAST LANSING – The following statement can be attributed to MEA President Paula Herbart regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling in Janus v. AFSCME:

“There’s an old union axiom that says, ‘An injury to one is an injury to all.’  Whether you’re in a so-called ‘right-to-work’ state as we are in Michigan, or one of the 22 states directly affected by this misguided Supreme Court decision, this direct attack on working families in favor of corporate interests is shameful.

“Six years ago, when Michigan Republicans rammed through their attack on unions, many predicted MEA’s death.  They were wrong.  Educators and this union continued to fight for what we’ve always fought for: a great public education for every child, regardless of zip code, and a level playing field that results in fair wages, benefits and working conditions for all.

“We are not going away, nor will the unions in other states who are negatively affected by today’s decision.”
