Detroit teachers have overwhelmingly voted to authorize union leadership to call a “safety strike” if the school district doesn’t meet their demands to start the school year online.
“The action that the union took today is not an action that we wanted to take. It’s an action that we had to take,” Terrence Martin, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, said during a Wednesday evening press conference.

Trying to keep a foothold in a shrinking U.S. market, Big Tobacco has introduced a new smoke-free product that it says is closer than ever in taste, feel and smell to traditional cigarettes.
And for the first time ever, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will allow the company, Philip Morris, to market its electronically heated tobacco product as one that “significantly reduces the production of harmful and potentially harmful chemicals” even as it delivers roughly the same amount of nicotine found in cigarettes.

Using the word “experimenting” when it comes to opening schools is not comforting to parents and teachers. For teachers, it’s like rubbing salt in a wound. What this pandemic has brought to light are the past inequities of public education, inequities that have been all about dismantling America’s public schools. It has included the disregard and disrespect of professional teachers who hold schools together.
